Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania 1971 Centenary of Livingstone & Stanley Meeting
Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania · 1971 · 30c, 50c, 1/50, 2/50
This set of four stamps commemorates the 100th anniversary of the famous meeting between explorer Henry Morton Stanley and missionary Dr. David Livingstone at Ujiji, near Lake Tanganyika. The designs feature portraits of both men, a map of their routes, and a depiction of their historic encounter. The stamps were a joint issue for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The meeting in 1871 was a major event in the history of African exploration, as Stanley, a journalist, had been sent to find Livingstone, who was thought to be lost while searching for the source of the Nile.
