Japan Meiji Era Emperor Mutsuhito Stamps

Japan · 1872 · Various

This series of stamps features a portrait of Emperor Mutsuhito, known posthumously as Emperor Meiji. The designs, often featuring the Imperial Chrysanthemum Seal, symbolize the modernization and centralization of Japan during his reign. These were among the first stamps issued by Japan, replacing the earlier 'Dragon' issues.

Issued during the Meiji Restoration, these stamps represent Japan's rapid industrialization and adoption of Western technologies, including a modern postal system, which unified the nation.
