Chrysanthemum Crest, 1 Sen Blue
Japan · 1872 · 1 Sen
This definitive stamp is part of the 'Chrysanthemum' series, one of Japan's earliest stamp issues. The design features the Imperial Seal of Japan, a stylized chrysanthemum with 16 petals, centrally located within an ornate circular frame. The denomination '1 Sen' is indicated by Japanese characters at the top and bottom.
Issued during the Meiji Restoration, this series replaced the earlier 'Dragon' stamps and symbolized the modernization and centralization of Japan under Emperor Meiji. The use of the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest asserted national identity and imperial authority on the country's new postal system.
