Jamaica Queen Victoria Postage Stamp
Jamaica · 1860 · 1d
This stamp features a diademed profile portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left, set within an octagonal frame. The design is based on the 'Chalon Head' portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon. The country name 'JAMAICA' is inscribed at the top, with 'POSTAGE' below, and the denomination 'ONE PENNY' at the bottom.
This was the first postage stamp issued by Jamaica, marking the beginning of its independent postal system while still under British colonial rule. The use of the Queen Victoria portrait was standard for British colonies at the time.
