Jamaica 1860 Queen Victoria Chalon Head
Jamaica · 1860 · 1d
This stamp features the iconic 'Chalon Head' portrait of a young Queen Victoria, based on a painting by Alfred Edward Chalon. The design is framed by an ornate octagonal border with the country name 'JAMAICA' at the top and the denomination 'ONE PENNY' at the bottom. The stamp is unwatermarked and was printed by De La Rue in London.
This was the first postage stamp issued by Jamaica, marking the beginning of its independent postal system while still a British colony. The use of the Chalon Head portrait was common among British colonies during this period.
