Italian Offices in the Levant, 10 Para on 5 Centesimi

Italian Offices in the Levant · 1874 · 10 Para on 5c

This stamp is an Italian 5 centesimi definitive from the De La Rue series, overprinted with a new value of '10 PARA' for use in Italian post offices within the Ottoman Empire. The original stamp features the profile of King Victor Emmanuel II. The overprint was necessary to revalue the stamp for local currency.

Issued for use in Italian post offices in the Levant (Constantinople, Smyrna, etc.), these overprinted stamps facilitated mail service for Italian citizens and businesses operating within the Ottoman Empire before the establishment of universal postal agreements.
