Italy Postage Due, Blue and Carmine

Italy · 1870 · 1 Lira

This is one of Italy's first postage due stamps, featuring a large numeral '1' indicating the value of one Lira. The design is simple and functional, printed in two colors, blue for the frame and carmine for the central numeral, to make it easily distinguishable from regular postage stamps.

Issued in 1870, this stamp represents the early efforts of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy to standardize its postal system, including the collection of insufficient postage from mail recipients.
