Italy · 1863 · 15c
This definitive stamp features a left-facing profile portrait of King Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. The design is framed by an ornate oval, with the denomination 'CENT. 15' at the bottom and 'FRANCO BOLLO POSTALE ITALIANO' inscribed around the portrait. This particular issue was printed by De La Rue in London.
Issued shortly after the unification of Italy (the Risorgimento), this stamp was part of the first definitive series for the new Kingdom of Italy, replacing the various issues of the formerly separate Italian states.
