This stamp is a 1902 overprint on an earlier 1882 issue. The original green 5 Aurar stamp, featuring a large numeral '5', was overprinted with 'Í Gildi '02-'03' in black ink. This overprint was done to revalidate older stamp stocks for postal use.
The 'Í Gildi' (Valid) overprints were a practical measure by the Icelandic postal service to use up remaining inventories of older stamps, a common practice in many countries during this period.
