Iceland 1900 Official Stamp, Black Surcharge on 16 Aur
Iceland · 1900 · 16 Aur
This is an official service stamp created by surcharging an existing definitive stamp. A black 'Þjónustu Frím.' (Service Stamp) overprint was applied to the 16 aur gray numeral definitive stamp of 1882. The original design features the denomination '16' within an ornate oval frame.
At the turn of the 20th century, Iceland, while under Danish rule, managed its own postal affairs and issued specific stamps for official government correspondence to control and account for postage costs.
