Persia, Lion and Sun, 1 Shahi Black on Bluish Paper
Iran · 1868 · 1 Shahi
This is the first officially issued postage stamp of Persia (modern-day Iran). The design features the classic Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) motif, a prominent national emblem, set within an ornate circular frame. The denomination is indicated by Persian numerals in the four corners.
Issued under the Qajar dynasty during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, this stamp marks Persia's entry into the global postal system and the beginning of its philatelic history. These early issues were crudely printed and imperforate.
