Iraq · 1918 · 1a on 10pa
This stamp is an Ottoman Empire 10 paras stamp overprinted in black with "IRAQ IN BRITISH OCCUPATION" and a new value of "1 ANNA". The overprint was applied locally in Baghdad following the British capture of the city during World War I. The underlying stamp features the tughra (calligraphic monogram) of Sultan Mehmed V.
Issued during the Mesopotamian campaign of World War I, these overprinted stamps mark the transition from Ottoman to British control in the region that would become modern Iraq.
