India Postage 1/2 Anna Queen Victoria
India · 1854 · 1/2 Anna
This stamp features a youthful portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left, within an ornate rectangular frame. The design, created by Captain H. L. Thuillier, was printed in blue by the Surveyor-General's Office in Calcutta. It is notable for being India's first postage stamp and one of the world's first bi-colored stamps, although this specific denomination is single-colored.
Issued in 1854, this was the first stamp produced in India, marking the standardization of its postal system under British rule. It replaced the earlier, locally issued Scinde Dawk stamps.
