Israel 1948 Doar Ivri - First Coins
Israel · 1948 · 10 Pruta
This stamp is part of the first series issued by the newly independent state of Israel, known as 'Doar Ivri' (Hebrew Post). The design, by Otte Wallish, features an ancient Judean coin from the period of the First Jewish-Roman War (66-73 CE), depicting a lulav and etrogim. The tabs below the stamps, a distinctive feature of early Israeli issues, are inscribed with 'Doar Ivri' in Hebrew.
Issued just two days after Israel's Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948, the Doar Ivri series marks the establishment of the nation's postal service. The use of ancient coin motifs symbolized the revival of Jewish sovereignty in the historic homeland.
