This set, known as Doar Ivri (Hebrew Post), represents the first postage stamps issued by the state of Israel. The designs feature ancient Hebrew coins from the First and Second Jewish Revolts against Rome, symbolizing the renewal of Jewish sovereignty. Each stamp's value is given in mils, the currency of the British Mandate, as the new state had not yet established its own currency.
Issued on May 16, 1948, just two days after Israel's Declaration of Independence, these stamps were prepared in secret during the final days of the British Mandate for Palestine. They are a powerful symbol of the birth of the modern state of Israel.
