This set, known as 'Doar Ivri' (Hebrew Post), was the first series of postage stamps issued by the newly independent State of Israel. The designs feature ancient Judean coins from the First Jewish-Roman War and the Bar Kokhba revolt, symbolizing the restoration of Jewish sovereignty. Each stamp's denomination is given in 'mils', a currency unit of the British Mandate of Palestine.
Issued on May 16, 1948, just two days after Israel's Declaration of Independence, these stamps were prepared in secrecy under the British Mandate and represent a foundational moment for the new state.
