Doar Ivri (Hebrew Post) First Stamps of Israel
Israel · 1948 · 3m - 1000m
This is the first series of postage stamps issued by the newly independent state of Israel in May 1948. The set, known as 'Doar Ivri' (Hebrew Post), features designs based on ancient Hebrew coins from the First and Second Jewish Revolts against Rome. The denominations range from 3 to 1000 mils, and each stamp includes a tab (tête-bêche) with an inscription related to the coin's design.
Issued just two days after Israel's Declaration of Independence, these stamps are a powerful symbol of renewed Jewish sovereignty after nearly 2,000 years. The use of ancient coin motifs connected the new state directly to its historical roots in the land.
