Ireland 1950 Holy Year Commemorative Set
Ireland · 1950 · 2½d, 3d, 8d
This set of three stamps commemorates the 1950 Holy Year, a period of pilgrimage and prayer in the Catholic Church. The designs feature religious iconography: the 2½d stamp shows the Papal Tiara and Keys of St. Peter, the 3d depicts the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, and the 8d features the Basilica of St. John Lateran. The stamps were recess printed by Waterlow & Sons.
Issued by the Republic of Ireland, these stamps reflect the country's strong Catholic identity in the mid-20th century and its participation in the global Holy Year celebrations proclaimed by Pope Pius XII.
