Ireland Gerl Definitive Series, Watermark E

Ireland · 1971 · Various

This definitive series, issued from 1971 to 1974, features designs based on early Irish art and metalwork. The artwork was created by German artist Heinrich Gerl, leading to the series' popular name. The stamps were printed in photogravure by the Stamping Branch of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in Dublin Castle and feature a watermark of the letter 'e' for Éire.

This series replaced the long-running Sword of Light definitives and represented a modernization of Irish stamp design, drawing inspiration from the nation's rich Celtic and early Christian artistic heritage.
