Ireland 1922-1937 Irish Free State Definitive Series
Ireland · 1922 · Various
This definitive series, issued by the newly formed Irish Free State, features four distinct designs representing national identity. The designs include a map of Ireland, the Arms of the Four Provinces, the Cross of Cong, and the Sword of Light. These stamps replaced the British stamps overprinted for use in Ireland and were the first truly Irish postage stamps.
Issued following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921, these stamps were a powerful symbol of Ireland's new status as a self-governing dominion within the British Commonwealth.
