Greece 1920 Surcharged Definitive Issue

Greece · 1920 · 50 Lepta on 2 Drachmai

This stamp is part of a series created by surcharging existing definitive stamps from the 1911-1913 'Engraved' issue. The original design features a depiction of Iris, the messenger goddess in Greek mythology, printed in blue. A prominent red surcharge reading '50 ΛΕΠΤΑ' was overprinted to change its face value.

Following World War I and the Greco-Turkish War, Greece faced economic instability and currency devaluation, necessitating the urgent surcharging of existing high-value stamp stocks to meet new postal rates.
