Thrace (Gümülcine) Overprint on Bulgarian Stamp

Greece · 1913 · 10 Stotinki

This stamp is a Bulgarian issue featuring Tsar Ferdinand I, overprinted in black with 'ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΙΟΙΚΗΣΙΣ / ΓΚΙΟΥΜΟΥΛΤΖΙΝΑΣ' (Hellenic Administration / Gümülcine) and a new denomination. It was issued for use in the city of Gümülcine (now Komotini) during the Greek occupation of Western Thrace.

Issued during the Second Balkan War in 1913, these overprints mark the brief period of Greek military administration in Western Thrace before the territory was ceded back to Bulgaria by the Treaty of Bucharest.
