Greece Small Hermes Head
Greece · 1886 · 1 Lepton
This definitive stamp features a profile of the Greek god Hermes, the messenger of the gods, facing right. Known as the 'Small Hermes Head' issue, it was printed in Paris and is distinguished from earlier 'Large Hermes Head' issues by its smaller, more refined design. The denomination is indicated in the lower corners.
Issued during the reign of King George I, the Small Hermes Head series replaced the earlier designs that had been in use since the 1860s, marking a new era in Greek philately with updated printing techniques.
