This set of twelve stamps commemorates the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens. The designs feature iconic scenes from ancient Greek sports and mythology, including depictions of classical statues like Myron's Discobolus and the Hermes of Praxiteles, as well as architectural landmarks like the Panathenaic Stadium and the Acropolis. The series was the first set of commemorative stamps ever issued for the Olympic Games.

Issued to finance the 1896 Athens Olympics, these stamps are considered the world's first Olympic commemoratives and played a crucial role in funding the revival of the ancient games.
