Ghana Independence Issue, Specimen Overprint, Blocks of 4

Ghana · 1957 · 1d, 2d, 2½d, 4d

This set of four stamps commemorates Ghana's independence on March 6, 1957. The designs feature a map of Ghana, the national flag, and a portrait of Prime Minister Kwame Nkrumah. These particular examples are blocks of four overprinted with 'SPECIMEN' for distribution to postal authorities and philatelic agencies, and were not valid for postage.

Issued to mark the moment the British colony of the Gold Coast became the independent nation of Ghana, the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from European colonization.
