Memelland 1922 Overprint on French Allegorical Stamp
Memelland · 1922 · 1 Mark
A definitive French stamp from the 'Allegorical subjects (Type Merson)' series, originally issued around 1900, overprinted in black with 'MEMEL / 1 Mark' in five lines. The original French currency values and 'Republique Française' inscription are fessed out, indicating its new use for Memelland.
This stamp was issued for Memelland in 1922 during its administration by France under the League of Nations mandate following World War I, before its annexation by Lithuania in 1923. Such overprints were common for newly administered territories.
