France 20 Centimes Blue, Cérès Issue

France · 1849 · 20c

This stamp features a profile of Cérès, the Roman goddess of agriculture, wearing a garland of wheat and grapes. The design, created by Jacques-Jean Barre, symbolized the fertility and prosperity of the French Republic. The denomination '20c' is inscribed below the portrait, with 'REPUB FRANC' above.

Issued in 1849, this was one of the first postage stamps of France, released shortly after the establishment of the Second Republic. The 20 centimes blue was the standard domestic letter rate at the time.
