France 1849 1fr Cérès, Vermilion

France · 1849 · 1fr

This stamp features the head of Cérès, the Roman goddess of agriculture, facing left, wearing a garland of wheat and grapes. It is part of France's first series of postage stamps, known as the Cérès series, designed by Jacques-Jean Barre. The vermilion (vermillon) shade is highly sought after by collectors.

Issued during the Second Republic of France, this was the highest denomination of the first French postage stamp series. It was primarily used for registered letters and heavier mail.
