France Ceres 20c Blue, Type I
France · 1849 · 20c
This stamp features a profile of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, wearing a garland of wheat and grapes. The design, created by Jacques-Jean Barre, was the first postage stamp design for France. The denomination '20c' is inscribed below the portrait, with 'REPUB FRANC' above.
Issued in 1849, this was one of the first postage stamps of France, released during the Second Republic. It replaced the 20c black stamp (Scott #1) and was used for domestic letter rates.
