This definitive stamp features the 'Marianne des Français', an allegorical representation of the French Republic. The design, by artist Thierry Lamouche, depicts a modern, forward-looking Marianne wearing the traditional Phrygian cap of liberty. This version was introduced in 2004 and used for the standard domestic letter rate (Timbre à Valeur Permanente or TVP).

Issued under the presidency of Jacques Chirac, this stamp continues the long French tradition of using the Marianne figure on definitive postage, a practice dating back to 1849.
