Marianne du Bicentenaire, Definitive Stamp
France · 1990 · 2,30 F
This definitive stamp features the 'Marianne du Bicentenaire' (Marianne of the Bicentennial), an allegorical figure representing the French Republic. The design, created by Louis Briat, was selected through a competition to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution in 1989 and was used for several years on definitive postage.
Issued in the wake of the bicentennial celebrations of the French Revolution, this stamp series replaced the previous 'Sabine de Gandon' definitive and became a familiar sight on French mail throughout the early 1990s.
