Marianne de Dulac, 2.50 Francs
France · 1939 · 2.50 Fr
This definitive stamp features the 'Marianne de Dulac' design, an allegorical representation of the French Republic. Created by artist Edmond Dulac, the design depicts Marianne wearing a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of liberty, against a simple background. This series was intended to replace the earlier 'Sower' and 'Peace' types.
Issued just before the outbreak of World War II, the Marianne de Dulac series was prepared in London and intended for use in France after its liberation. However, some values were put into circulation by the Vichy government before being replaced.
