Finland Definitive Stamp, M17 Lion Type

Finland · 1917 · 5 Penniä

This definitive stamp features the Finnish coat of arms, a crowned lion rampant holding a sword, standing on a scimitar. The design, known as the M17 or Saarinen type, was created by architect Eliel Saarinen and became a long-running and iconic symbol of Finnish identity and independence.

Issued in 1917, this series coincided with Finland's declaration of independence from the Russian Empire, making it one of the first stamp series of a newly sovereign nation.
