Empress Zewditu I, Unissued
Ethiopia · 1917 · 1/4 Guerche
This stamp features a portrait of Empress Zewditu I, the first female head of an internationally recognized state in Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. The design is framed by an ornate border with the denomination in Amharic script at the bottom. This particular issue was prepared for use but never officially released.
Issued shortly after Empress Zewditu's accession to the throne in 1916, this stamp represents a period of political transition in Ethiopia. Although printed, these stamps were never put into circulation, making them a fascinating unissued series.
