Spain, King Alfonso XIII, 15 Centimos

Spain · 1889 · 15c

This definitive stamp features a left-facing portrait of the young King Alfonso XIII as an infant, often referred to as the 'Pelón' (Baldy) issue. The design is simple, with the portrait enclosed in an oval frame, the country name 'ESPAÑA' at the top, and the denomination '15 CENTs DE PESETA' at the bottom.

Issued during the regency of his mother, Maria Christina of Austria, this series was the first to depict Alfonso XIII, who was king from his birth in 1886. These stamps were in common use for postage throughout Spain and its colonies.
