Spain 1931 Pro-Republic Provisional Overprint

Spain · 1931 · 10c

This provisional stamp features a black overprint 'REPUBLICA ESPAÑOLA' on the 1930 10c carmine definitive stamp depicting King Alfonso XIII. The overprint was applied to existing monarchist stamp stocks following the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic. This expedient measure allowed post offices to continue functioning during the transition of power.

Issued immediately after King Alfonso XIII fled Spain and the Second Spanish Republic was declared on April 14, 1931, these overprinted stamps signify a major political shift from monarchy to republic.
