Denmark 2 Rigsbankskilling, Royal Emblems

Denmark · 1851 · 2 Rigsbankskilling

This is the first postage stamp issued by Denmark, featuring a design known as the 'Royal Emblems'. The central motif is the Danish Crown, flanked by a sword and sceptre, all enclosed within a wreath of oak leaves. The denomination '2 R.B.S.' (Rigsbankskilling) is inscribed at the bottom.

Issued under King Frederick VII, this stamp marks Denmark's entry into the postal reform movement that began with Great Britain's Penny Black. It replaced the complex system of distance-based postal rates with a uniform prepaid system.
