Baden 9 Kreuzer Black on Rose Error
Baden (German States) · 1851 · 9 Kreuzer
This classic stamp from the Grand Duchy of Baden features a large numeral '9' within a central circle, indicating its face value of 9 Kreuzer. The design is simple, with 'BADEN' inscribed above and 'FREIMARKE' (postage stamp) below, surrounded by an ornate, engine-turned pattern. This particular stamp is a famous color error, printed in black on blue-green paper intended for the 6 Kreuzer value, instead of the correct rose-colored paper.
Issued in 1851 as part of Baden's first series of postage stamps, this color error is one of the greatest rarities in German philately. Only a handful of examples are known to exist, making it a legendary item among collectors.
