Bavaria 1 Kreuzer Black, "Schwarzer Einser"
Germany (Bavaria) · 1849 · 1 Kreuzer
Known as the "Schwarzer Einser" (Black One), this was the first postage stamp issued by the Kingdom of Bavaria, and consequently the first in the territory of modern-day Germany. The design is simple, featuring a large central numeral '1' to denote its value of one kreuzer, surrounded by an ornate frame. It was printed in black on handmade paper containing silk threads as a security measure.
Issued on November 1, 1849, this stamp predates the unification of Germany in 1871, originating from the independent Kingdom of Bavaria. Its release marks a significant milestone in European postal history, following Great Britain's Penny Black by nine years.
