Prague Castle (Hradčany), 500 Haléřů

Czechoslovakia · 1918 · 500 h

This definitive stamp features a stylized depiction of Hradčany, the Prague Castle complex, as viewed from the Vltava River. The design, created by renowned artist Alphonse Mucha, became an iconic symbol of the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic. It is part of the first series of stamps issued by the country following its independence.

Issued in December 1918, this stamp was among the very first for the new nation of Czechoslovakia, which was established just months earlier after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the end of World War I.
