Cyprus Queen Victoria Overprinted 'CYPRUS'

Cyprus · 1880 · 1/2 Penny

This stamp is a British one penny stamp featuring a profile portrait of Queen Victoria, overprinted with the word 'CYPRUS' in black capital letters. The original stamp is plate number 208, printed in a rose-red color. This overprint marks the first postage stamp issued specifically for use in Cyprus under British administration.

Issued in 1880, two years after Britain assumed administration of Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire, these overprinted stamps established the new British postal system on the island.
