This set of four stamps was issued by Cuba to commemorate the XVII Olympic Games held in Rome, Italy. The two regular postage stamps depict ancient Greek athletes: a discus thrower and wrestlers. The two airmail stamps feature a runner crossing the finish line and a javelin thrower.
Issued during the early years of Fidel Castro's government, these stamps celebrated international sporting events, projecting an image of normalcy and global participation despite the political upheaval following the Cuban Revolution.
