Cuba 1855 Isabella II, First Issue
Cuba · 1855 · ½ Real Plata Fuerte
This is the first postage stamp issued for use in Cuba under Spanish colonial rule. The design features a portrait of Queen Isabella II of Spain, facing left, within an oval frame. The inscription reads 'CORREOS' (Post) at the top and the denomination 'Y 1/2 R. PF.' (½ Real Plata Fuerte) at the bottom.
Issued in 1855, this stamp marks the beginning of philatelic history for Cuba, which was then a key Spanish colony. The use of the Spanish monarch's image was standard practice for colonial issues of the time.
