Cuba, First Postage Stamp, 'Y' Overprint

Cuba · 1855 · 1/2 Real Plata Fuerte

This is the first postage stamp issued for use in Cuba, which was then a Spanish colony. The design features a portrait of Queen Isabella II of Spain, originally from a Spanish issue, but distinguished by a 'Y' overprint, signifying 'Ysla de Cuba'. The stamp is denominated in the colonial currency of 1/2 Real Plata Fuerte.

Issued in 1855 during Spanish colonial rule, this stamp marks the beginning of Cuba's postal history. The use of overprinted Spanish stamps was a common practice for Spanish colonies during this period.
