This is the first postage stamp issued by Costa Rica. The design features the national coat of arms, which includes three volcanoes representing the country's three mountain ranges, a rising sun, and two sailing ships on either side symbolizing trade via the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. The denomination "MEDIO REAL" is inscribed at the bottom.

Issued in 1863, this stamp marks Costa Rica's entry into the global postal system, replacing earlier handstamps and pre-paid markings. The design reflects the nation's pride and its importance as a trading hub.
