Red Maiden in the Green Robe surcharge

China · 1897 · 2 cents

This stamp is a 2-cent small figure surcharge in green on a 3-cent red revenue stamp. Known as the 'Red Maiden in the Green Robe', it is one of the most famous and valuable Chinese philatelic items.

Issued during the Qing Dynasty in 1897, this temporary stamp was created due to currency reform. Existing stamps with silver denominations could no longer be used, leading to the surcharging of revenue stamps for postal use.
