Chile 1883 Christopher Columbus 2c Carmine Rose

Chile · 1883 · 2c

This stamp features a left-facing portrait of Christopher Columbus, the Genoese explorer credited with the European discovery of the Americas. The design is enclosed in an ornate oval frame with the denomination '2' in the upper corners and 'CENTAVOS' at the bottom. The stamp was printed by the American Bank Note Company in New York.

Issued during a period of economic recovery and national consolidation in Chile following the War of the Pacific (1879-1884), this definitive series replaced earlier designs and was used for several years.
