Basel Dove
Switzerland · 1845 · 2½ rappen
The Basel Dove is a notable stamp issued by the Swiss canton of Basel. The design, created by architect Melchior Berri, features a white dove embossed in the center, carrying a letter in its beak, set against a background of light blue and carmine. It is renowned for being the world's first tri-color stamp, utilizing black, carmine, and blue ink in its printing.
Issued in 1845, this was one of the early cantonal stamps of Switzerland, predating the first federal issues of 1850. It was valid for postage for letters within the city of Basel.
