Switzerland 2½ Rappen 'Basel Dove'
Switzerland · 1845 · 2½ Rappen
The Basel Dove is a classic stamp issued by the canton of Basel. It features a white dove embossed in the center, carrying a letter in its beak, set against a background of black, crimson, and blue. This was the world's first tri-color stamp and is renowned for its beautiful and innovative design.
Issued on July 1, 1845, this was one of the early cantonal issues in Switzerland before the establishment of a federal postal system in 1849. It was designed by the architect Melchior Berri and is considered a masterpiece of philatelic art.
