Switzerland Double Geneva
Switzerland · 1843 · 5+5 Centimes
The Double Geneva is the first stamp issued by the Canton of Geneva. It features the cantonal coat of arms, an eagle and a key, within a shield, repeated twice. The inscription reads "Poste de Genève" at the top and "Port Cantonal" at the bottom, with the denomination "5 C." on each half.
Issued two years after the Zurich 4 & 6, this was the third stamp issued in Switzerland and the fifth in the world. It was designed to pay for postage within the city (5c) or anywhere in the canton (10c).
